What’s In Your Beauty Products
Ever since I was 15 I’ve been pretty big into healthy eating and lifestyle. I try to reduce the number of chemicals I consume, I avoid junk food and long ingredient names I can’t pronounce, but I avoided thinking about the chemicals in my beauty products. Hair care, makeup, toothpaste, you name it, I’ve neglected these entire other aspects of healthy living because it just seemed too daunting. When would it stop? Would I become that hypochondriac afraid of everything and any possibility of toxins? But then I started learning more about it.
Knowledge is power my friends, and truthfully, sometimes I do wish I lived in a blissful ignorant bubble. Sometimes it’s very disheartening and depressing knowing all of the horrible things that are happening in the world today, the things that are allowed to happen, and the things that people are doing purposefully for us to get sick. Anyway, I’m going into a completely other topic… so let’s move on!
Going to my local shop for beauty products, it’s very difficult to find products that don’t have a grocery list of chemicals. But watching a recent video I realized just how important it is to avoid these chemicals. Think about it, our skin is our largest organ and we absorb so much of what we put on it. Why would you put toxic chemicals on your skin?
I had always been a little wary of the ingredients in my beauty products but they hadn’t hurt me so far so what’s the problem? The problem is that doing research many of the ingredients are linked to things such as cancer, birth defects, and poisoning. Who would have thought that in 2017 many named brand and high-end products contain lead and mercury? What?!
This calls for a major detox…
The thing is, in the States we just do not regulate beauty products. Like, at all. We are the worst when it comes to regulating chemicals. Most countries in Europe have banned so many ingredients that we use on things such as beauty products and even food. Some even have a warning of “may be hazardous” from the FDA but it is still allowed. How?! America, step up your game! Raise your standards! We are better than this!
Funny enough though, the FDA does not approve beauty products before they hit the shelf, the term “natural” for food doesn’t include pesticides or things that come in contact with the food during the process of producing the food, and “natural” in beauty products often means that one or two ingredients in the product is actually natural. It’s time for a refund.
So which chemicals are we talking about? Well, to name them all will take all week but I’ll give you a rundown of some of the most common to avoid. Wait for the shocker, they are in LOT of products, even the ones that say “natural” and “healthy” blah blah blah.
- Parabens: To give you a rundown, this chemical is linked to breast cancer and is found in makeup, body care products, even food. Seriously?!
- Formaledehyde: Weakens immune system, carcinogen.
- BHA and BHT’s: Classified as possible carcinogens, causes long-term damage if exposed for long periods of time, causes hormone disruption.
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): Carcinogen, is belived to cause problems with human development.
And these are only just a few of the many harmful chemicals you’ll find in your beauty products.
So now it is time to hunt for chemical free all natural products. If you’re interested in learning more I recommend this article about the “dirty dozen” chemicals by the David Suzuki Foundation.
